Cycling Team
The Wheelworks Women's Cycling Team is a group of enthusiastic and energetic women who love to ride and race bicycles, but also feel there is a greater purpose to racing. These women truly want to have an impact on the good of society and do so through donating their race winnings to various charitable causes, including the fight to end domestic violence.
When the team started in 2000, the idea of donating race winnings was
unheard of, as most cycling teams would just split the prize money among
the team riders. Thanks to the generous support of Verizon Wireless, the
team was able to focus on their goal of supporting a worthy cause. The
dedication these women, who race and work full-time, has inspired others
to recognize how they themselves can also leverage their time and activities
to further promote charitable causes.
The success and exposure the Team has received prompted a fundamental
shift in the competitive cycling, as other teams have followed their lead
and started "racing for a cause". The enthusiasm these women
have for bettering society has spread throughout the cycling community
and has raised support and awareness for a variety of charitable foundations.
