DELTA

Domestic Violence Prevention Enhancement
and Leadership Through Alliances (DELTA)

Community Participation
Domestic and dating violence can be prevented, but WCRI cannot do it alone. We need people from every sector of our community to strategize on how best to prevent intimate partner violence in Providence’s communities. If we ban together, we can counteract harmful circumstances before they have a chance to produce violence.

To learn more, please contact Sheila Johnson, DELTA Coordinator, at 401.861.2761 x125 or at sjohnson@womenscenterri.org.

Join the Team!

Who can join
Many of our team members are from social service agencies, schools, businesses, and local nonprofit organizations that serve Providence or Rhode Island. We welcome Providence residents who are active in their neighborhoods and community. Youth over the age of fifteen can join us. Parents are encouraged to join!

Time commitment
The committee meets once a month for approximately 60-90 minutes. We also communicate over email and phone a few times a month. We ask members to make a one-year commitment. (Meetings are typically held on a Thursday or Friday. Contact Sheila for a current schedule).

Member duties
Team members assist the DELTA conduct outreach. We ask every member to represent the people they serve and help direct the project. Some members may also want to research community needs or reach out to recruit more team members.

Represent. You must represent the people you serve at the planning table. It is important to make sure that we consider everyone’s needs as we develop projects.

Direct. You will help determine which "at-risk" population our work will focus on. You will also help determine what strategy will work best with the chosen populations.

Research. You can help research possible programs by contacting other states doing prevention work. Making a few calls or even Googling some projects would be helpful. We also need to conduct a needs assessment on Providence. It would be great if you could provide information on the population/communities you represent.

Outreach. Help us by recruiting new team members and/or contacting organizations to see if they would like to work with us. A good example is contacting your child’s school to see if would be interested in a dating violence awareness programming.

You do not need to be an expert in domestic violence. A basic understanding is helpful but we can share our knowledge. It’s more important to have people that are caring and passionate about preventing intimate partner violence.
